So far, there are no obvious signs of an oil spill in the area of the southern Red Sea, where the Greek-flagged tanker ‘Sounion’ remains anchored in international waters, in which a fire broke out, after being attacked by the Houthis on August 22.
According to the same information from EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, its unit, which monitors the area, reported that five fires were detected on the ship’s deck and it is estimated that the fires are located around the hatches of the ship’s oil tanks.
All vessels passing through the area must observe strict security measures as the M/V Sounion is an environmental and navigational hazard, EUNAVFOR ASPIDES points out.
