EU28 draft: It is indispensable to regain control over external borders

“For the Schengen acquis to be preserved, it is indispensable to regain control over the external borders”, according to the draft conclusions of the EU summit, shown to CNA by a senior EU diplomat.

The EU28 vow to find a deal soon on better control of Schengen area external borders, taking stock on Tuesday’s Commission proposal.

The member states will start negotiating on how they could accelerate the implementation of already adopted decision on hot spots, finger printing, registration, and return of those not eligible for international protection to their countries of origin.

“We must have no illusions, our priority is to regain control of our borders” a senior diplomat said.
“There is a good reason to go ahead and share responsibility,”

Meanwhile, at the Austrian Permanent Representation premises 8 members of the so called coalition of the willing are meeting with Turkish PM Ahmet Davutoglu, to whom they are not going to present any specific number (bilaterally if any).

As chancellor Merkel said “A lot of things have happened since then (adoption of EU- Turkey action plan). We want to hear from Turkey what it has done and what are the next steps, on migration and on the action plan”.
