US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland pays Nicosia a visit on Tuesday and is expected to reiterate during her meetings support for a “fair and lasting” settlement of the Cyprus problem.
Nuland will be received by Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades at 1800 hrs (1500 GMT).
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN led talks have been underway since May 2015 aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof.
Nuland will be in Nicosia today, “to meet with Republic of Cyprus officials to discuss bilateral and regional issues”, a State Department media note issued last week from the office of the Spokesperson said.
“She will also meet with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders and UN Special Advisor Eide to convey continued US support for a fair and lasting settlement of the Cyprus problem through the process facilitated by the UN Secretary General’s Good Offices Mission,” added.
