Cyprus leaders jointly attend a theater play in Limassol

At 1950, tonight, President Nicos Anastasiades and his spouse arrived at the entrance of Rialto Theatre in Limassol where a few minutes later Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci with his spouse appeared as well.

President Anastasiades approached T/c`s leader car to welcome him to Limassol.

Both leaders entered the theater to watch the play “Cyprus: Saddened in Greek, wounded in Turkish”, presented by the Turkish Cypriot Theater, based in the occupied part of Nicosia, capital of Cyprus.

Outside the Rialto Theatre people who gathered to attend the event, applauded the two leaders. Present were also the Mayor of Limassol Andreas Christou, the President of the Board of Rialto Kikis Kazamias, General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou, Cyprus Minister of Education etc.

The play, based in Faize Özdemirciler’s poetry and directed and performed by Yaşar Ersoy, refers to the tragic events of the past and the present, focusing on the future.

The performance will be held with Greek subtitles, that were translated by a group of students at the University of Cyprus, under the guidence of professor Niyazi Kızılyürek.

Cyprus was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN backed talks are currently underway between Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof.
