Cyprus issue, energy and terrorism the focus of talks Defence Minister had in Oman

Cyprus`and Oman`s sincere intention to further enhance was reaffirmed during the talks which Defence Minister Christoforos Fokaides had with his Omani counterpart Sayyid Badr Bin Saud Bin Hareb Al Busaidi.

According to an official press release, Fokaides` official visit to the Sultanate of Oman wraps up on Tuesday. This is the first official visit by a Cypriot Defence Ministry to Oman. It takes place in the framework of initiatives taken by the government to promote the role which Cyprus can play in the broader region.

During the meeting, issues of mutual concern were discussed, such as maritime security, addressing terrorism, new disproportionate threats and the need for cooperation to promote regional stability.

The Defence Minister briefed his Omani counterpart on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, and the prospect of the resumption of the UN-led Cyprus talks. He referred to the new energy prospects in the Eastern Mediterranean and the positive role it can play in the development and prosperity of the peoples of the region, adding that Cyprus can benefit from Oman`s experiences.

The ministers talked about mutual interest in the potential in humanitarian missions and search and rescue operations, as well as the common approach to the need for a peaceful settlement of conflicts, with respect to international law and good neighbourhood relations.
