Cyprus – Israel to host conference on flight safety and EEZ search and rescue

A conference will take place in Nicosia on the 19th of May on flight safety and search and rescue issues in the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) of Cyprus and Israel.

The conference is co-organized by the Flight Safety Foundation- Mediterranean (FSF-MED) of Cyprus and the FISHER INSTITUTE of Israel with the support of the Ministries of Transport of Cyprus and Israel.

According to an official press release, the conference, which will be addressed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Works of Cyprus, on behalf of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, will be attended by specialists and high ranking officials from Cyprus, Israel, Greece and other countries, as well as international organisations including the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

The aim of the conference is to present and discuss all issues concerning flight safety of helicopters which will operate once the platforms for oil extraction in the EEZs of Cyprus and Israel will be active. They will also discuss ways to further improve the coordination between the Eastern Mediterranean countries in search and rescue issues.

In the framework of the conference a memorandum of cooperation will be signed between the FSF-MED and the Center of Coordination for Search and Rescue.

In addition, the annual FSF-MED price will be awarded to AEGEAN Airlines for its contribution in the development of air transport in the Mediterranean.

Executive Director of FSF-MED Christos Petrou said that the conference is of great importance given the developments in the energy sector in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider cooperation between Cyprus, Israel and Greece.

He pointed out that such activities contribute in the government of Cyprus` policy regarding the tripartite strategic partnerships with neighbouring countries and have a role to play in the already excellent relations between Cyprus and Israel in the fields of flight safety and search and rescue.
