Cypriot seafarers could channel to state funds more than 50 million euro annually, the President of the Association of Merchant Marine Officers Cyprus Paris Demetriou has said.
Addressing the 4th Annual General Meeting held on 12th of February in the southern coastal town of Limassol, he said that “If the Ministry of Transport has the will to support the Cypriot seafarer, they could easily channel to the island over 50 million euros per year.”
The President of the Association thanked the Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) for its valuable cooperation, saying it employs 4500 people ashore and 55000 seafarers, leading the unemployment of the seafarers to be in zero levels.
During the AGM, the new administrative council has been elected as follows:
Chairman- Theodoros Marneros
Vice Chairman- Anastasios Filippou
Treasurer- Elias Hadjisavvas
Board Secretary- Christos Hadjiyiannis
Member- Giorgos Athanasi
The activities of the Association in 2015 were presented and future action outlined by Association members at the meeting.
During the annual meeting, the Cyprus Shipping Chamber has been honored by the MMOA for its continuous contribution to Cyprus` shipping worldwide. The General Director of CSC, Thomas Kazakos, became an honorary member of the Association. These two awards were received by the Vice President of CSC, Dieter Rohdenburg.
Rohdenburg, in his speech, thanked the MMOA for honoring the CSC and said that the Association successfully promotes the nautical occupation. Furthermore, he added that MMOA works hard to upgrade the profession and the well being of every Cypriot seafarer, for example with his harmonization with other flags globally.
