Arlie, a female lesser spotted eagle (Aquila pomarina) has begun her trip from Namibia to her nest in Brasov County, the Romanian Ornithological Society (SOR) announced on Monday on its Facebook page.
Arlie left her winter shelter in Africa on February 8, exactly the same day as in 2015; in one week, she has flown more than 1,300 kilometres and still has 6,700 km to the nest in central Romania. Her travel is monitored by a satellite transmitter applied to her in 2013, under a project for the conservation of her species in Romania.
Last year, after her second African winter, she established a personal best time, arriving in Romania on March 31.
Arlie’s journey over three continents crosses Angola, Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Israel, Syria, Turkey and Bulgaria. On February 11 she flew the longest distance, 369 km; on February 12 it crossed the border to Zambia. More…
