Colectiv nightclub fire death toll hits 29

The death toll of the fire that broke out Friday night in the Colectiv Bucharest club and of the ensuing stampede reached 29, as another two patients died, one at the Bucharest Burn Surgery Emergency Hospital, the other at the Bagdasar Hospital.

Dr. Adrian Stanculea, spokesman of the Burn Surgery Hospital, said that a 25-year old woman had died Sunday morning, and another ten patients were in critical condition. With one exception, the patients at the Intensive Care unit are receiving vasopressure support with IV adrenaline, and are in a stable, although very serious condition, Stanculea said, adding that four of the wounded would undergo excise and skin grafting operations on Monday.

“As of tomorrow they will undergo a surgery program. Things can still change, we’ll decide tomorrow morning, the final decision depends on the patients’ evolution. The operations will consist of skin excise and grafting, the deep-burn area will be covered with skin harvested from the patients’ bodies, for those with less severe burns, because it adheres best to the would. Skin donations help the patients with bad burns get over a delicate moment with skin grafts from donors. That skin will fall off, but until then there’s a period of respite and in the end the patient gets own skin grafts,” Stanculea explained. More…
