Co-President of European Greens in Cyprus to speak against Turkish nuclear plans

Co-president of the Greens–European Free Alliance group in the European Parliament, Rebecca Harms, will pay Cyprus a three – day visit.

According to a press release by the Cyprus Green Party, Harms, who arrives tomorrow in Cyprus, will deliver a speech at an event organized on Saturday against the construction of the Nuclear Power Plant in Akkuyu, in the Mersin Province, south of Turkey.

The event is organized by the Cyprus Antinuclear Platform in cooperation with environmental organisations from Turkey and the support of the European Greens.

During her stay in Cyprus, the German MEP will meet a delegation of the Cyprus Greens, and be received by Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Energy, Ioannis Kasoulides and Yiorgos Lakkotrypis respectively.

She will also meet with the Mayor of Kerynia (which is occupied by Turkish troops since 1974) Glafkos Kariolou.

The Republic of Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and still occupies 37% of the island`s territory. Cyprus is a full EU member state since the enlargement of 2004. The nuclear plant is situated in southern Turkey, north of the island of Cyprus.
