Chief Prosecutor Kovesi: DNA handled this year over 10,200 criminal cases

The National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) handled in 2015 over 10,200 criminal cases, with a team of only 90 prosecutors, Chief Prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi stated on Thursday.

During an interview granted to public television broadcaster TVR, Kovesi was asked why some cases are faced with delays, and some politicians are complaining that they are investigated for acts committed in the past.

“Indeed, there are situations in which, in 2015, we are investigating acts from 2010 or 2011 and here there are two distinct situations. Firstly, we have the situation when the DNA opened these cases some years ago and did not finalize them, some for lack of evidence, others because prosecutors had many cases pending and, as a small digression, I can tell you that, this year, the DNA had to handle over 10,200 criminal cases with only 90 prosecutors. Imagine what this big volume of cases means. Secondly, there are many situations when we receive complaints from citizens or we receive information from mass-media, from companies, from various individuals who write to us about facts committed several years ago which we have to investigate,” Kovesi explained.

She stressed that in other cases investigations can take longer, as complex checks are necessary. More…
