CERT-RO’s Jianu: Technically speaking, Romania fares well in terms of data security, faces legislative deficit

Director of the CERT-RO National Computer Security Incident Response Team Augustin Jianu believes Romania is faring well in terms of human resources for the protection of personal data stored with information systems, but it is facing a deficit of specific legislation.

“Technically speaking, and also as far as human resources are concerned, Romania is faring quite well; where it does not fare great is legislation, a chapter where it faces a deficit. There is currently no law to say exactly who, what public organisation deals with what field, what the attributes of that organisation are and what its accountability. Currently, if a nationwide hack occurs or a hack that involves very many citizens, we cannot put a finger on one organisation and say they are to be blamed because they had to do something they did not do, because such things are not defined yet. We have a major problem there, but I hope we will solve it,’ Jianu told the “Security for Information Technology and Communications — SECITC 2015,”conference on Thursday hosted by the Military Hall of Bucharest.

Jianu added that there were and there still are very many cyberattacks a day, with millions of computers compromised overall. ‘Very many important organisations of the Romanian state — agencies, and ministries — are very secure now, more so than they used to be three-four years ago,’ he said.

In his turn, Bitdefender Security Manager Catalin Cosoi said the number of cyberattacks has increased both in Romania and worldwide. More…
