Bucharest National Cathedral to be consecrated in October by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Patriarch Daniel

Bucharest, Jan 9 /Agerpres/ – The National Cathedral in Bucharest will be consecrated on Sunday, October 26, by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople and Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

According to the Basilica Agency of the Romanian Patriarchate, the event marks 140 years since the Romanian Orthodox Church was recognized as an Autocephalous Church and 100 years since its elevation to the status of Patriarchate.”We love our daughter Church of Romania and look forward to participating in the official celebrations in Bucharest next year, dedicated to the centennial of the elevation, by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, of the Autocephalous Church of Romania to Patriarchal dignity,” His All-Holiness Bartholomew I declared last year, according to the cited source.

According to Basilica, the construction works are almost complete. A team of 220 artists coordinated by iconographer Daniel Codrescu are working diligently on the mosaics, following an iconographic plan compliant with the Byzantine tradition and covering 25,000 sqm. The mosaic iconostasis, spanning over 400 sqm, is the largest of its kind in the Orthodox world.
