Big cities invest over 30 ml euros in “smart” islands for separate waste collection

Major Romanian cities such as Brasov, Iasi and Cluj-Napoca are investing over 30 million euros in total in “smart” islands for separate waste collection, according to a specialist analysis released on May 23.

According to data compiled by Clean Recycle, some of these investments began in 2023, others are scheduled for implementation by 2026, and most of the funding comes from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).

At the top of the list of cities with the largest investments is Brasov, with a total of approximately 10 million euros for a project involving the purchase of 275 digitised ecological islands.

Since November 2024, the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forestry has been running a national programme to install over 2,000 digitised eco-islands for separate waste collection in 50 localities across Romania. The project, financed through the NRRP, has a total value exceeding 260 million euros.

Clean Recycle manages a portfolio of over 900 companies that produce and place packaging waste on the market, operating throughout Romania in sectors such as FMCG and retail, agribusiness, automotive, distribution, industrial production, pharmaceuticals and others.
