BEYOND HISTORY The Karolyi Castle of Carei, where legends blend with history

With hundreds of years of tumultuous history behind it, the Satmar-based Karolyi Castle of Carei is mostly famous for its legends that seem more likely to come from storybooks than from the lives of real people who used to live on this earth. Those who pass through the main gates of the castle feel like stepping into a whole different world, where legends and mystery and the old times atmosphere become truly fascinating.

The most important tourist objective in the Satu Mare County hides many legends. Stories about the impressive tunnels through which Francis Rakoczi used to escape on the back of his horse when chased by enemies or the basement full of riches confiscated by the Nazis remind about those who lived here in the old times.

The history of the castle is closely related to that of the noble family Karolyi, who built its first home on the current spot of the castle back in the 15th century.
