Bacau Airport – first in Romania to request financing for major renewable energy project

‘George Enescu’ Bacau International Airport is the first in Romania to submit a funding request for a major renewable energy project, the institution’s representatives announced this weekend in a release.

“The ‘George Enescu’ Bacau International Airport proudly announces the official submission of the funding application for the construction of its own renewable power-production facility under the ‘Modernization Fund’ program. With the opening of the project submission session, our airport becomes the first in Romania to submit a funding application, with a project worth a total of RON 24,403,597 (VAT included),” the release states.

The project envisages the creation of a 1.25 MW photovoltaic power plant, accompanied by a 2.064 MWh energy storage system, to fully cover the airport’s own electricity consumption and that of the related infrastructure.

The annual output of renewable energy is estimated at 1,605.648 MWh, and the cut in emissions is expected to be 982.496 tons of CO2 per year.

The facility will cover an area of approximately 219 hectares of land under the administration of the airport, part of the Bacau County public domain.

The project represents an essential step towards modernization and transition to a green airport, amid rising energy prices, climate change and Romania’s commitments to climate neutrality by 2050.
