Attorney General Costas Clerides has confirmed to CNA that the Egyptian authorities sent a request for the extradition of the 59 year-old Egyptian Seif el Din Mostafa, who is accused of hijacking EgyptAir`s plane.
As the Attorney General said, “as soon as the investigations in Cyprus are completed, for any offenses for which we have jurisdiction, it will be decided whether he will stand trial in Cyprus or will be extradite”.
He also said that his extradition is a matter of political decision and will be taken in consultation with the Government.
Larnaca District Court issued on Wednesday an eight day remand order against Seif el Din Mostafa who hijacked an Egypt Air plane on Tuesday on a domestic flight from Alexandria en route to Cairo and forced it to land in Cyprus.
The charges against Seifel-Din Moustafa-Eman, 59, include hijacking, illegal possession of explosives, abduction and terrorism.
The hijacker of EgyptAir flight MS181, which landed at Larnaca Airport on Tuesday morning, surrendered himself to the Police at around 1440 local time (11.40 GMT). All passengers and crew were released unharmed and returned to Cairo.
