All set for Pafos mayoral by-election on Sunday

A record eight candidates will run in Sunday’s by-election for a mayor in Pafos, after the resignation of Savvas Vergas, who is facing corruption charges.

The eight candidates are independent Aristos Vassiliades, who is backed by three opposition parties AKEL, DIKO and EDEK, municipal councillor Fedonas Fedonos supported by the ruling DISY party, Citizens’ Alliance-supported Doros Paphitis, Green Party-supported Andreas Masouras and independent candidates Sophie Hambiaouridou, Chrysanthos Chrysanthou, Andreas Chrysanthou and Vangelis Mauronikolas.

According to the chief returning officer in Pafos Yiannakis Mallourides, 18, 023 citizens have the right to vote in the by-election, of whom 2,088,  i.e. 12%,  are EU citizens.  A total of 30 polling stations will operate in the elections throughout the municipal area.

The polls will open at 07:00 a.m. local time (05.00 GMT) and will close at18:00, with one hour break at noon from 12:00 until 13:00.

Around 150 public servants and 65 police officers will be on duty for the elections.

The district administration is in close cooperation with the police to ensure an incident free election.

Elections result is expected to be known around 20:00 Sunday night.

The proclamation of the Mayor will take place tomorrow evening in front of the building of the district administration offices.
