23rd edition of Sighisoara Medieval Festival ushers in record-challenging stunts

The 23rd edition of the Sighisoara Medieval Festival running Thursday through Sunday under the banner “Minstrels and Troubadours – Five Centuries of Medieval Music and Theater,” signed up for three world record attempts, seeking to enter the Guinness Book with: the largest ornamental sword hammered at a medieval festival; the largest round pretzel baked at a medieval festival; and the world’s largest flag ever hoisted in a historic site.

The envelope project of the three attempts: “Medieval Sighisoara — The First Medieval Festival in Romania in the Race for World Records,” will be officially launched on Friday.

According to artistic director of the festival Liviu Pancu, in a first for a medieval festival in Romania, the organizers run a record-challenging “joust” with the hammering of the 4.50 meters long “Sword of the Titans”; the 30m long and 5m wide “Knights’ Flag”; the hopefully record-breaker round pretzel with a 20 m diameter — the “Giants’ Food.”

There will also be an attempt to break a national record with the largest Romanian folk-art mask — the 5m tall “Witch Doctor’s Mask”.

The Crafts Fair opens officially on the first day of the festival, with craftsmen from Sighisoara and all over the country holding a secret meeting before they start activity. More…
