One in three Italian women have been victims of physical or sexual violence, Istat said Friday.
“Approximately 6.4 million (31.9%) Italian women between the ages of 16 and 75 have experienced at least one instance of physical or sexual violence in their lifetime (starting at age 16).
18.8% have experienced physical violence and 23.4% have experienced sexual violence; among the latter, 5.7% of women have experienced rape or attempted rape.
26.5% of women have experienced physical or sexual violence from relatives, friends, colleagues, acquaintances, or strangers,” said the latest Istat survey on violence against women, which finds that rapes are committed “mostly by partners.”
